• The Gnu Image Manipulation Program, or GIMP, is a photo quality image editor, somewhat similar to Adobe PhotoShop.  It was originally developed for unix, but there's a version available for windows.

• WinAmp, a MP3 (and WAV, etc) audio player.
• IrfanView is a freeware image viewer/editor, good for dealing with batches of screen shots and such.

(I do advocate using linux, but sometimes you need to use windows -- like for most games, for instance ;-)
